Intel vs AMD processor?

zanzibar | Asked  5 months ago | Last response was 4 months ago
A question about

I’m looking at building a new computer, mostly for gaming, with either an Intel i7 3770k or an AMD FX 8350. Was wondering what y’all think about about the pros and cons of either.

The i5 3570K is more suited for comparison that the 3770K, as the i7 is $330, while the FX chip is $200.  Anyways, the Z77 chipset supports PCIe 3.0 (the FX990 does too, but you need to buy a special motherboard for that), which boost graphics cards speeds.  The AMD is better for professional uses, such as video editing, while for gaming, the intel is better.  Both chips have unlock mulitpliers for easier overclocking.  The AMD chip is 125 watts compared to the 77 watt intel chip, so you need a bigger power supply for the AMD.  You're better off waiting for Haswell and Steamroller to come out though, as they will completely dominate the CPU battlefield.  So wait for Haswell and Steamroller to come put and THEN buy a new CPU.

well, isnt the i7 3770K alot more expensive than the FX-8350?

    quick newegg check

    FX-8350 cost $200

    i7 3770K cost $330

amd motherboards are cheaper with same features

if you are gonna edit video, unpack alot of archives etc, amd is the way to go

if you are gonna game, both are good, you wont notice to much, unless you play at 640x480 resolution, where the cpu is not the bottleneck

all modern cpus are fast, btw if you go the amd fx-8350 route you can buy your self a fast ssd or a bigger ssd :)

If it's for gaming only I'd say that you should orient your search towards value for money. Gaming is relatively more GPU-dependent nowadays compared to a few years back. From my research when buying a 3930K is that it is completely overkill for gaming, but I need it for industry music production software.

However the K designation means that the multiplier is unlocked, and with future water-cooling and OC a 3770K has a considerable lifetime ahead of itself. OCing these are a breeze, and you can expect up to a 50% increase with good cooling before things start getting complicated.

The Intel i7 in general is quite a bit faster, so you’ll get a much better gaming experience on the i7. AMD’s FX 8350 will still run games pretty well and is quite underrated, but where it really excels is with multitasking due to having 8 modular cores (vs the i7’s 4 cores) – a lot of games won’t take full advantage of those cores though, so for your purposes the i7 is probably your best bet. That said, you’ll end up paying more for the i7 so AMD’s FX 8350 does represent pretty good value for the money. Here's a link to our comparison on CPUBoss:
