Can You Build A PC To Compete With The Consoles—For The Same Price?

We know a few things about the next generation of consoles. Both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One will be running 8-core AMD Jaguars APUs with 500GB HDDs and 8 GB DDR3 and GDDR5 for the Xbox One and PS4 respectively. Microsoft’s console will release at $499, while Sony will offer theirs for $399. Is it possible to build a rig that matches these specs at the same price?

This question was put to r/buildapc and their outlook was grim. From Pr0fil3′s top comment:

The thing is you can’t directly compete with a machine which is being mass produced and and whose games are being optimised to run on it.

That didn’t stop the community from trying, though. The top build put forward by u/fp4 was this:

Take the windows licensing out of it and you can upgrade the Radeon HD 7770 to a GTX 660, which you can check out just how much more powerful the 660 is in a comparison here.

So it’s possible to at least match the Xbox One, and it will only be a matter of time before PC hardware prices come down enough to match the wholesale components of the next generation of consoles.
