Arduinos are a hobbyist’s dream: they offer an easy learning curve but an incredible number of uses and variations. The microcontroller is basically a single board housing an 8-bit Atmel AVR or a 32-bit Atmel ARM, with ports offering input to a variety of add-on modules which can all be controlled and programmed via beginner-friendly software, with a simple USB connection between the device and your computer. The modules, called “shields,” can do anything—from controlling servo motors (opening up the entire field of robotics) to touch screens.
